Mitochondrial Haplogroup X

Mitochondrial haplogroup X is thought to have arisen sometime between 20,000 and 35,000 years ago, probably in West Asia. It is a relatively rare mitochondrial haplogroup among Europeans and was probably introduced to the region by Near Eastern farmers during the Neolithic. It is likewise present in the Levantine populations including Lebanese, as well as North and East Africa, in similarly low frequencies. This haplogroup is also found among indigenous Americans from North America, including the Sioux, the Nuu-Chah-Nulth, the Navajo and the Yakama.
